About our choir

DSC08247.JPG

Sweet Harmony was born in April 2014 with an eager and committed group of 40 singers. There are usually around 50 members, some who have been part of the group since the beginning and others who have joined us along the way. The singers are very warm and welcome new members. We have 2 taster sessions at the start of each term and then people commit for the whole term. This really strengthens regularity of attendance and allows us to go deeply into the repertoire without having to reteach the parts every week. Members have access to recordings of harmony parts so they can practise between sessions.

Our main emphasis is on enjoying the learning and singing of gorgeous songs together, indulging in the pure deliciousness of creating mouthwatering harmonies, but we also like sharing our repertoire with others. We often do a performance at the end of term and sometimes sing at other events. Our gigs have included the following events/ venues: The National Botanical Gardens, The Narberth A capella Voice Festival, Carmarthen Inter-faith day and Carmarthen White Ribbon Walk.

Sweet Harmony was created and continues to be led by Maya Waldman.

Maya is a creative and experienced community musician who teaches with great skill and warmth. Her teaching is infused with humour and support for the singers which helps them feel safe and free.

Before moving to Carmarthenshire Maya worked for 6 years in London. In addition to two weekly community choirs she worked on a variety of projects with a range of groups, spanning from music for early years, to singing with people experiencing homelessness.

Maya worked extensively in health settings, running Singing for Breathing sessions at The Royal Brompton Hospital and Womb Song singing workshops for pregnant women at Chelsea and Westminter Hospital.

Since settling in West Wales she has really enjoyed pouring her love and creativity into Sweet Harmony, helping to nurture a supportive and harmonically enriching community of people.
